Pink Illuminations for October Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Submitted by Amanda Hemsworth from Pink Champagne BCS Dragon Boat team

For this years October breast cancer awareness month, Pink Champagne Dragon Boat team worked with a number of iconic places in Dorset, UK where they are based to get them illuminated in pink during the month.

These included Sherborne Abbey an impressive building dating from Saxon times.

As well as Wimborne Minster Church and Christchurch Priory Church.

The library roof top at Bournemouth University was also lit up in pink as well as the Ferris Wheel at Bournemouth Pier.

The team were also present at each location with information boards and handed at leaflets to members of the public showing what signs to look for in detecting breast cancer, and promoting the importance of getting into the habit of self checking each month.

In talking to women at these events it was surprising how many didn’t check themselves regularly, so even if one person started doing this as a result of the information handed out and now knew of all the signs to look for then the awareness campaign was a success.

Pink Champagne Dragon Boat team train and paddle all year round from their base at Hengistbury Head in Dorset, UK. They will give a warm welcome to any breast cancer paddlers who are visiting the area and wanted to come and paddle with them.
