30th Anniversary

In 2025, the Abreast In A Boat Society will proudly celebrate its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of support and inspiration for breast cancer survivors through the unique and empowering sport of dragon boating.

AIAB started as a study by Dr Don McKenzie to dispel the myth that repetitive upper body exercise could cause lymphedema. Further studies continue to prove that exercise is medicine, and that physical exercise and camaraderie play a significant role in the healing process following a breast cancer diagnosis.

To commemorate this milestone, AIAB will host a special Breast Cancer Paddlers (BCP) division in the 2025 Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival set to take place June 20 to 22, 2025. This is the largest dragon boat festival in North America with over 200 teams participating Registration for our BCP Division opens in September 2024, with further details on special events to be announced. We invite breast cancer teams from around the world to join in these celebrations.

This event will not only honour AIAB's rich history and the countless individuals it has supported but will also spotlight the unity and resilience of the breast cancer paddling community. The festival promises a series of as activities, including some with Dr. Don McKenzie in attendance, to celebrate the achievements of breast cancer paddlers and to foster connections among participants. By bringing together teams from diverse backgrounds and countries, the festival aims to highlight the global impact of AIAB's mission and the strength of its international community.

AIAB's influence extends far beyond its Vancouver origins. The society has inspired the formation of 389 teams across 38 countries, a testament to the powerful message of hope and recovery it promotes. As these teams prepare to converge at the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival, the anniversary will serve as a reminder of how far the movement has come and the lives it has touched worldwide.

The 30th anniversary event is more than just a celebration; it's an opportunity to reflect on the journey, honour the courage of survivors, and look forward to a future filled with continued support and solidarity in our race against breast cancer.
