Auckland Anniversary Day

Submitted by Katherine Waller.

Monday, January 29th, 2024, the Auckland Viaduct basin came alive with the vibrant sights and sounds of dragon boat racing as part of the 184th Oceanbridge Auckland Anniversary Day regatta celebrations. There was a lot of excitement being able to get on the water for this event due to the last 3 years being canceled due to Covid and the horrendous weather bomb that hit us last year causing devastating flooding across the city and wider areas.

Cindy, one of our more experienced paddlers, for whom this is her third Anniversary Day event, shares some of her thoughts about the day. "Despite challenging conditions, I found the day really enjoyable. Thank you to the BC teams who traveled to Auckland to make the day competitive. We always look forward to seeing you and enjoying the camaraderie between the teams. It was a day of great racing. Congratulations to Waikato Treasure Chests, Pinkies and Boobops Moana taking out the top three placings. And to Boobops Aroha for keeping us on our toes in the minor finals.

I was very excited for some of our newer paddlers. There were a few firsts for a number of the crew. For many it was their first experience of the fun and exhilaration of the Auckland Anniversary Day regatta racing, as well as being the first time ever paddling on salt water. I felt that we bonded well as a team and I could see the growth and development in each paddler. Our sweep was outstanding as usual and maintained control of the boat and composure with fairly challenging wind conditions. It was lovely being in our own home town and have so many family, team members and new paddlers come down to support us, cheer us on - and bring us treats."

Katherine, a newer paddler, loved her first experience of the event. "The venue, being in the Viaduct, at the heart of the city, with so many bystanders watching, gave an even more pumping atmosphere. And that finish... with millions of dollars’ worth of boats sitting just beyond the end of the finish line, it sure made for some fast stopping!"

Well done team you did yourselves proud. We can't wait for the next event!
